Eleven miles. Three hundred and eighteen turns at the Tennessee–North Carolina line — the most concentrated stretch of driving in America. Often deemed the best driver's road in the country.
The Road
US-129 crosses Deals Gap at the Tennessee–North Carolina line. The famous stretch runs eleven miles with 318 curves and no intersecting roads or driveways. The pavement is smooth, the corners are tight, and the trees close overhead for most of it. The speed limit is 30 mph, and it is enforced.
Expect company. The Dragon draws drivers and riders from across the country, and photographers post along the road most days. Traffic builds by mid-morning on weekends; the reward for an early start is a clear run and empty pullouts.
When to Drive
Spring through late fall. Weekday mornings are quietest. October brings peak color and peak crowds — plan around them. Winter runs are possible on clear days; watch for ice in the shaded corners.
